Why the Bahamas Belong on Your Yacht Bucket List

Turquoise water so clear you can see your anchor on the seabed, powdery white and pink sand beaches, and more than 700 islands and thousands of cays scattered across the Atlantic: the Bahamas are one of the world’s great cruising grounds. Just a short hop from Florida, they feel a world away.
Whether you dream of a family catamaran holiday or a fully crewed luxury yacht charter, this guide covers everything you need to plan your Bahamas voyage: weather, islands, highlights and practical advice.

Bahamas Weather: When Is the Best Time to Charter?

The Bahamas enjoy a subtropical climate with warm temperatures all year round.
- December to April (high season): The most popular time for a Bahamas yacht charter. Expect daytime temperatures of around 24–28°C (75–82°F), sunshine, low humidity and steady trade winds, ideal for sailing.
- May to June: A fantastic shoulder season. It is hotter (28–31°C / 82–88°F), calmer, quieter and often better value.
- July to October: Hot and humid, with water temperatures above 29°C. This is also the peak of Atlantic hurricane season (June to November), so most charter activity slows down.
Our tip: For the perfect balance of weather, wind and atmosphere, aim for late winter and spring. Christmas and New Year are very popular, so book early.

The Best Islands to Visit by Yacht
Each group of islands has its own personality, which is exactly what makes island-hopping so rewarding.
The Exumas: The Jewel of the Bahamas
A chain of around 365 cays and the number-one destination for yacht charters. Highlights include the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay, the nurse sharks of Compass Cay, and Thunderball Grotto, a sea cave made famous by James Bond. Sandbars, hidden coves and glassy shallows make it a paradise for snorkelling and paddleboarding.
The Abacos: Sailing Heartland
Sheltered waters, charming villages and a laid-back sailing culture. Visit the candy-striped lighthouse of Hope Town on Elbow Cay, enjoy beach bars on Great Guana Cay and explore Treasure Cay’s long white beach. The Abacos are particularly good for families and first-time sailors.
Eleuthera and Harbour Island
Home to the legendary pink sand beaches of Harbour Island, Eleuthera offers a stylish, relaxed atmosphere, the dramatic Glass Window Bridge and excellent dining.
Nassau and Paradise Island
The vibrant capital offers history, colourful colonial architecture, shopping and nightlife, a good contrast to the quiet out-islands and a convenient embarkation point.
Andros and the Berry Islands
Andros boasts the world’s third-largest barrier reef and mysterious blue holes, perfect for divers. The Berry Islands offer quiet anchorages and some of the best fishing in the region.
Long Island and Cat Island
Further off the beaten track, Long Island is home to Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the deepest in the world, while Cat Island offers wild beaches and a more authentic, untouched side of the Bahamas.

Practical Information for Your Bahamas Trip

Currency: The Bahamian dollar (BSD) is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted virtually everywhere. Carry small bills for tips and tiny island shops.
Language: English is the official language.
Entry requirements: A valid passport is required for most visitors. Rules vary by nationality and can change, so check the latest requirements before you travel. Your charter team will help with customs and clearance procedures.
Getting there: Fly into Nassau (NAS), Exuma (GGT) or Marsh Harbour (MHH) in the Abacos, with direct connections from many US cities.
Tipping: Around 15–20% in restaurants. For a crewed yacht charter, a gratuity of 10–20% of the charter fee is customary.
Electricity: 120V with US-style plugs (Type A/B). Bring an adapter if needed.
Connectivity: Signal is good in Nassau but can be patchy in remote cays. Consider this part of the charm.
What to pack: Light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, polarised sunglasses, a light jacket for evenings, soft-sided luggage and non-marking deck shoes.
Provisioning: Out-island shops are small and supplies limited. Your charter provider can arrange provisioning in advance, so your fridge is full before you leave the dock.
Why a Yacht Is the Ideal Way to Explore the Bahamas

The Bahamas are an archipelago, and that is precisely why a yacht is the perfect way to experience them.
- Your floating hotel. Many of the most beautiful islands have few or no hotels. On a yacht, you take your accommodation with you and wake up somewhere new every morning.
- Access to the unreachable. Secluded beaches, sandbars and hidden coves are often only accessible by boat.
- Perfect sailing conditions. Short distances between islands, reliable winds and sheltered waters make for relaxed, enjoyable passages.
- Ideal for catamarans. The shallow banks of the Bahamas suit catamarans’ shallow draft, letting you anchor close to the beach. Their stability and generous deck space are perfect for families and groups.
- Total privacy and flexibility. Choose your route, linger where you love it, skip what you don’t.
- Water sports on your doorstep. Snorkelling, paddleboarding and diving straight from the back of the boat.
- Luxury at sea. With a professional crew, enjoy gourmet meals, tailored service and effortless comfort.
